Digicel keeps launching date a secret

Written By : Kelera serelini . Digicel is going to make a surprise announcement of its launching date. Digicel development manager Thomas Underwood yesterday said despite public information the company would commence operation in October but the launch date for its operation is to be a secret.
“We will not be making any announcement yet as it is a big surprise,” Mr Underwood said.
However, Mr Underwood confirmed that works on the company’s network structure was going ahead as planned and Digicel hopes to launch in a big way.
Meanwhile, Vodafone Fiji Limited congratulated Digicel for the acquirement of its licence.
Vodafone managing director Aslam Khan said they welcomed the competition.
“We would like to congratulate Digicel on the awarding of their mobile licence by the government,” Mr Khan said.
“We have always welcomed competition and participated fully with government to come to an amicable arrangement that has facilitated the opening of the telecommunication market.
“We welcome the newest player into the Fiji market and look forward to some
exciting times which we hope will be good for everybody especially the consumers.”
Digicel was officially handed its licence to operate a mobile network last Friday.
This was after it had handed the interim government a cheque of US$10million (FJ $14.75m).
Digicel operates in Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, and Vanuatu and is expected to launch in Fiji later this year.
Interim Minister for Trade and Communications Tom Ricketts said the company has made significant investment in Fiji to build a world-class network and it would definitely spur competition in Fiji by offering innovative and accessible mobile services that offer real value to customers.
