Drug farmer jailed for eight years

Written By : Sun Fiji Newsroom. A man who pleaded guilty to possession of half a kilogram of marijuana was jailed for eight years yesterday.
Kini Sulua, 33, was imprisoned by Justice Daniel Gounder after he admitted carrying a sack containing dried leaves which were later proven to be 5,203 grams of marijuana on April 10 this year.
Justice Gounder said it was unfortunate that there was a market for drugs and that most of it was consumed by young people.
He said the courts had taken a stern view of drug cultivators.
“Possession of marijuana is prevalent in our community,” said Justice Goundar.
“Obviously there is a market for this drug.
“Unfortunately the users are young people.
“Also the use of marijuana in our community in many cases is linked to violent crime.
“The courts take a serious view of those who sell or supply the drugs to others for commercial profit or gain.”
Sulua carried the sack of marijuana wrapped in cloth and foil from Tabuarua settlement in Navosa and caught a carrier going towards Sigatoka town.
The carrier was stopped and searched by police at the Navosa Police Station and Sulua’s sack was seized.
In mitigation, Sulua pleaded with the court saying he was the family’s sole breadwinner and he turned to marijuana because he had to feed his two children.
However, Justice Gounder said the offence was serious and that there was a huge amount of drugs involved.
Sulua was sentenced to eight years in prison.
