Written By : SUN FIJI NEWSROOM. There is an intensive effort by the Ministry of Health to curb the increase in the number of dengue cases in the Eastern and Western Divisions.
Director of Curative Health Services with the Ministry of Health, Dr Ami Chandra said efforts were concentrated in these areas as they seemed to be reports of a large number of symptomatic cases of dengue fever.
“We are keeping a close awareness in the Northern Division as well and the ministry of health advised the public to use mosquito nets to protect themselves and others from mosquitoes,” he said.
“If people have symptoms of dengue which may worsen they must consult their nearest health centre as soon as possible.”
Dr Chandra also mentioned that there were non-communicable diseases which were there for quite a while and were on the increase.
These diseases included diabetes, hypertension, strokes etcetera.
Dr Chandra said approaching the rainy season was a challenge and there was a tendency for an increase in communicable diseases such as diarrhoea, gastrointestinal diseases and mosquito borne diseases because of the increase in the number of breeding grounds.
“The breeding ground for these vectors leads to the increased chances of flaring up of leptospirosis and typhoid cases,” he said.
