No pay for Nair, Halapua

Written By : CHARLOTTE PETERS. The President’s Political Dialogue Forum interlocutors Dr Sitiveni Halapua and Robin Nair are not being paid by the interim government , says permanent secretary in the Prime Ministers Office Parmesh Chand.
They are not being paid by the interim government and I think that question should be directed to them because they are the best people to answer it,” said Mr Chand. He said the prime minister’s office would not comment on the forum as everything that needed to be said had been released and comments would only be made should the need arise. Mr Chand said there would be no further discussion on the issue saying the media and members of the public should be guided by statements released on Monday.
“Everyone should be guided by that and if there’s more to be said on the issue then a statement will be released,” he said.
Dr Halapua is understood to have said his expenses were paid by his employer – the East-West Centre in Hawaii. He said his job was to help restore democracy in countries facing problems in the Pacific and it was normal.
Dr Halapua said he assisted whenever the government of the day in any Pacific country requested his service.
He said Fiji benefited from that because it was a member of the standing committee of the centre.
He and Mr Nair will assist in identifying issues raised by political parties for the agenda of the forum.
