E-ticket system plan for buses

Written By : KERESI NAUWAKARAWA. An electronic ticketing system for the transport industry will soon be introduced.
In a bid to improve faster and efficient transport services, consultations between the Government and companies concerning the new system is under way.
This is a move that will be implemented by Government and it is expected to be in operation before the end of the year.
Ministry of Transport media officer Sainiana Waqainabete said talks about the new system had been fruitful.
“We have held consultations with the Ministry of Education and Telecom Fiji Limited, and we are on track with plans to launch the system,” Ms Waqainabete said.
“We are in the final stages and will soon award an overseas company to implement the system before the end of the school year.
She said the response concerning the new system was good.
“The ministry received tenders from three companies and the panel has evaluated the tenders and a decision has been reached on who to take on the project,” she said.
“The Ministry is optimistic with the progress and will work on a memorandum of agreement.”
Ms Waqainanbete said this would benefit a lot of people.
“The public transportation industry will replace paper ticketing with electronic ticketing (e-ticketing) to improve customer convenience,” she said.
“These will reduce expenses for transport agencies and government who have had a lot of expenses from the printing of tickets as part of the free bus fare vouchers for school children nationwide.”
She says the technology will eliminate queuing and wait times for ticket purchases.
Government will formalise an official announcement of the company which won the tender.
