Yaqona farmer advises islanders

By LOSALINI RASOQOSOQO

A yaqona farmer in Kadavu says marijuana is not the only way of getting quick good money. The comment was made by Alikisada Naisoro, the former chief executive officer of Rewa Rice Limited who now runs his grog business.
He told the islanders they could become millionaires just by planting grog. Mr Naisoro shared his farming or business techniques when the Police Commissioner, Brigadier-General Ioane Naivalurua visited his house last Sunday with senior officers.
“If they (farmers) plant 12 yaqona plants in a week, within the next three years they will become millionaires,” Mr Naisoro said.
According to Mr Naisoro, there was a time that he sold a single matured yaqona plant for more than $1000.
He said planting 12 plants in a week and not more will allow the owner to carry out maitenance work in his farm. He is one of the largest yaqona farmer on the island, employing labourers with a wage of $30 a day.
Mr Naisoro said there is a better life in the village rather than living in the towns and cities.
“We can get more money out here rather than living the high cost of life in the urban centres.
Mr Naisoro has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from USP, a graduate Diploma in Business from Australia and Masters in Business Administration also from Australia.
He says he is enjoying the benefits from his farm and he wouldn’t trade his life now for the city life.
