Scholarships for students of Cakaudrove studying in secondary schools and tertiary institutions were discussed during the Cakaudrove Provincial Council meeting at Yaroi Village in Savusavu yesterday.
Ministry of iTaukei Affairs Permanent Secretary, Savenaca Kaunisela, said students received their scholarships depending on their marks and grade point average (GPA) at tertiary level.
“We know the need for an increase in their allowance, especially with the expenses they face at the University of the South Pacific,” Mr Kaunisela said.
“Students have a lot of expenses in tertiary institutions especially that they have a lot of travelling and getting up to date with the environment around them.”
“Full scholarship is also being awarded to students and this includes tuition, allowance and accommodation.
“This depends on how hard working a student is and will continue to be. If their GPA drops, a part of their scholarship is also removed.”
He informed tikina (district) representatives that they needed to inform students that full tuition fees could be awarded if they worked hard.
Meanwhile, Cakaudrove provincial administrator Urai Rainima, has urged members of the council to inform students attending Form Seven to start applying for scholarships instead of waiting for the last minute.
