The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) has assured they will ensure all the sugar mills are ready before they enter the cane crushing season this month.
FSC executive chairman, Abdul Khan said the Rarawai Mill was one of the mills badly affected by the floods, hence FSC had to delay the start of crushing to July 10.
“But crushing in the Lautoka and the Penang mills, will start on June 26 and for Labasa mill, on June 29,” he said.
In terms of railway systems, Mr Khan said the Navo Bridge was critical for them which was commissioned this Tuesday.
“We had a lot of cane on the other side which was needed to be delivered and so we had to ensure that the bridge was ready before we started crushing,” Mr Khan said.
“The other areas which are important for us to look into are the rail system itself where the foundations had been washed away, so we have done a lot of work trying to get the rail system up as well.”
Mr Khan is calling on farmers to work with FSC in this year’s crushing season.
“We know that by working closely together we will see a good industry,” Mr Khan said.
