PM Voreqe Bainimarama’s warm congratulatory message to Luxembourg should be no surprise.
The landlocked Grand Duchy in Europe has become a strong ally of both Fiji and the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) under Commodore Bainimarama’s leadership.
Luxembourg has generously contributed to MSG activities. The most recent instance is financial help for MSG participation in Trade Pasifika at Denarau this week.
Our PM told their PM, Jean-Claude Juncker, on the occasion of Luxembourg’s National Day:
“It gives me great pleasure on behalf of the people of Fiji and my government to offer our warmest congratulations to you and to the Government and people of Luxembourg on your National Day. I wish you every success as well as many years of prosperity and well-being for your country.”
So no surprises too if Fiji strongly supports Luxembourg’s bid for a place on the United Nations Security Council instead of that by Australia. Yet another example of how Canberra’s policy on Fiji is a failure.
