Bank of Baroda (BOB) Labasa branch organised a blood drive at the bank yesterday.
The Bank won an award last year for collecting the highest amount of blood donations.
The bank managed to collect 180 pint of blood for over ten hours.
Bank of Baroda Labasa branch manager Vinod Prasad said such an annual program was part of their bank’s community service.
“We have been having this blood drive since 2009 to assist the Labasa Hospital blood bank stock supplies,” Mr Prasad said.
“I would like to thank my 13 staff for sacrificing their weekend to provide service to the public at large,” he said.
Mr Prasad said by doing this worthy cause they are able to enhance their customer service to another level.
Labasa Hospital Blood Bank manager Alena Koroi confirmed that the hospital has adequate stock of blood.
“Although our hospital has enough blood supply for this month we are trying to help other divisional hospitals,” Mrs Koroi said.
She said yesterday by midday flight they were able to send 50 pints of blood to Lautoka Hospital and later in the day they sent it to Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva.
“We are very thankful to BOB for being dedicated and helping not only Labasa Hospital but other divisional hospitals to keep up with the required blood stock,” Mrs Koroi said.
He said this was the only business house in Labasa that has been continuously organizing this blood drive at a large scale.
“The transfusion of blood and blood products helps save many lives every year,” Mrs Koroi said.
She said this life saving mechanism helps to do two things.
“Improve life expectancy and the quality of life for patients suffering from life threatening conditions and support complex medical and surgical procedures,” Mrs Koroi said.
She with better antibiotics and vaccination available in our hospitals today, one cannot ignore the usage of blood as one major mode of treatment used in the hospitals.
