Newport youngsters here for rugby

The Newport Rugby Club’s annual Fiji tour caused ripples of excitement in Nadi yesterday when its Under-14 team took on the Namaka Public School rugby team.
The Sydney based-club is among the largest in Australia and is no stranger to Fiji. It has been touring here for the past 10 years.
The Newport’s A, B and C U14 teams combined for a friendly match against NPS after playing against Mount Saint Mary’s Primary School and Nadi District School.
Tour co-ordinator Dave Kledie said Newport’s annual trip to Fiji was a tradition for their junior players, most of whom have their fathers on tour as well.
“We had rugby training for the boys when we arrived on Sunday. They’re loving Fiji and the cultural experience has been fantastic,” Kledie said.
“The dads are having a ball touring with their sons and watching rugby’s. It’s been fantastic for them. It’s been a wonderful experience.”
He said 61 players, 50 fathers and a host of officials make up the contingent that arrived last Sunday and are currently billeted at a popular resort on the outskirts of Nadi.
