Manganese mine to re-open in Nadroga

Oak Mines Fiji Ltd is proposing to re-open an old Manganese Mine in Nabu, on land belonging to the Matagali Noi Buli of the Tikina Malomalo in the province of Nadroga.
Oak Mines intends to redevelop the mine in Nabu as previously and recent studies have indicated high potentials of Manganese concentrations in that area.
The old Nabu mine of the 50’s and 70’s ceased operation due to low manganese prices during that period.
However, on the basis of better price, good leadership and excellent mining and environmental policies within Fiji Government, Oak Mines Ltd plans to make contributions to the revamped Fijian mining industry.
The Environment Resource Management Consultants (ERMC) was commissioned by Oak Mines Ltd to conduct an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) for the proposed Nabu Manganese mine.
The EIA is being preparing to access the potential environmental impacts of the proposal towards the surrounding environment and to recommend/develop relevant mitigating measures. This measure ensures that the mineral development is carried out in an environment sustainable manner.
The study is being undertaken according to the Terms of Reference (TOR) prepared by the Department of Environment as the overall approving authority for environment appraisal study commenced on the July 9, 2012.
As per the TOR an Environment Impact Assessment public consultation meeting of the project is scheduled to be held on Tuesday July 24, at the Nawai Secondary School and Vocational centre Queens Road (next to Nawai Police Community Post).
