The Fijiana rugby team shifted camp to Nadi yesterday as they wind down their preparations of the Oceania Women Sevens Qualifiers which will be held in Lautoka’s Churchill Park on Friday and Saturday.
The tournament is also doubling up as the next step in the qualification process for Rugby World Cup Sevens 2013 in Moscow
Teams competing are Australia, New Zealand, Cook Islands, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and Solomon Islands.
Fijiana coach, Elenoa Kunatuba said the side will put on their best performance and is also confident of a good outing.
“We do not underestimate any team competing in the tournament,”Kunatuba sad.
“And we are also banking on our experienced players to guide the young players in the team.
“Australia and New Zealand will be out to keep their top spots and so we have been preparing for this for a long time and we will do our best,” she said.
With the likes of Mereoni Yabakidrau and Elina Natauluva, the side will be entering the tournament as underdogs. The 2013 RWC has seen United States of America, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia already securing top spots in the tournament, the winner of the Oceania Women’s qualifiers will have to compete also at the Asia qualifiers before the final country to represent the Oceania region is selected to be part of the RWC next year.
“The spirit at camp is high and that is one area that we see is to our advantage.” All overseas based teams are expected to arrive into the country today.
