Problem children

In Fiji, students and teenagers who should be sitting behind their desks in schools are not there. Walk into any entertainment centre during school hours and you are most likely to see students in uniform.
This problem leads to unwanted behaviour like smoking, drug use and thefts. Truancy is a national problem that should be dealt with at all levels of our social and administrative structures.
Like all things to do with children, the frontline should be the home.
Bringing up the children is not a job done by remote control as it seems to be the case in some societies.  Too many of us are away from home for too long too often, either drinking grog or attending prayer meetings or having choir practices.
Schools also play an important part in the upbringing of our children.
It should teach positive thinking and motivate them to become achievers.
At government level, there is a need to put into place regulations that will allow relevant authorities to deal with parents of truants in a more forceful manner. Truancy is everyone’s business because it disturbs people and affects the general learning environment of other children.
