The Rewa Provincial Council treasurer, Timoci Soqoniavi, had “failed” in his duties when approving the payment vouchers for $11,000, the High Court in Suva heard yesterday.
This was relayed during the fourth day of trial of former Roko Tui Rewa, Savenaca Kamikamica.
During re-examination by Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) lawyer, Kitione Waqavonovono, the acting senior internal auditor at the iTaukei Affairs Board, Merewalesi Wavu told the court that Kamikamica did not have the final say in approving the payment of vouchers.
The charges: Kamikamica denied two counts of embezzlement and one count of abuse of office.
On the first count, it was alleged that while employed as the Roko Tui Rewa by the Fijian Affairs Board, on May 11, 2005, Kamikamica fraudulently applied $40 which he received as Development Assistant Scheme (DAS) fund on the account of Rewa Provincial Council for a purpose other than that for which was entrusted to him. On the second count, the FICAC alleged that on December 24, 2005, Kamikamica had fraudulently applied $1195 which he received as DAS fund on account of Rewa Provincial Council for a purpose other than that for which was entrusted to him.
On the third count of abuse of office, it was alleged that on March 10, 2006, Kamikamica, without lawful authority directed that $11,000 be removed from the DAS fund of Rewa Provincial Council.
