Fiji drowning cases rise

Fiji Police have warned about the rising number of drowning cases.

Fiji Police have raised concerns over the rise in the number of drowning cases.

Its latest figures show that the death toll from drowning is now 44, compared to 25 for the same period last year.

In the latest incident a 40-year-old diver of Drasa Vitogo in Lautoka drowned while diving for beche-der-mer with four others.

Police understand a rope tied to the diver’s waist got tangled as he tried to enter a small opening in a reef in Naviti waters.

The Fiji Police spokesperson Atunaisa Sokomuri has called on those intending to go out to sea to take safety precautions at all times.
