Former Wallaby rep Glen Ella will be the main man in charge for Flying Fijians for the upcoming Europe Tour.
Ella will be assisted by Flying Fijians Head Coach Designate Samu Domoni, Inoke Male and Mike Brewer who will join the team in Scotland. Fiji Rugby Union vice chairman and acting chief officer Keni Dakuidreketi said Domoni and Ella knew where they stood as far as coaching is concerned.
“There might have been a misinterpretation by some people over this. I have been consistent in everything I have said and certainly Sam and Glen knew from the start where they stood in as far the coaching role is,” Dakuidreketi said.
Ella who was brought in by the Fiji Rugby Union to assist the national team for the Europe tour was excited to be given the nod to coach the national team.
He said he was ready to guide our gladiators for this historic Europe Tour and had vowed to exhaust all avenues in trying to bring the best for our ruggers and for our country.
“I'm excited to be named as the head coach for this Europe Tour and I'm looking forward to the challenges that come with it,” Ella said.
“I will do all my best to bring the best for the boys and for the country.”
Ella said he was confident in the players that had been selected and he was hopeful of a good outing.
The former Wallaby great is also banking on the Europe based players to spark Fiji's campaign against the Europe rugby giants.
“I've seen a lot of players in Europe and they have been outstanding during the last few weeks of competition,” said Ella.
“And as for our local boys we need to expose them to these kinds of high competitive games that will improve their future games.”
Ella said their main focus at this point is their first game against Scotland and he's hoping the boys would deliver the goods for Fiji.
Meanwhile FRU chairman Bill Gavoka earlier stated the idea behind the hiring of Ella and Brewer is for Domoni to learn from them.
“The idea is for Sam to work with Glenn Ella and Mike Brewer, be assessed and monitored by them and eventually takes over,” said Gavoka.
“It is envisaged Domoni will fill the role left behind by Ilivasi Tabua and, in this instance, he will be appointed the Head Coach Designate,” Gavoka said.
The 10 Flying Fijians local players and 15 officials will leave our shores tomorrow for the three test matches against Scotland, Ireland and Romania.
