Volunteers find ‘real Fiji’ at orphanage

11/17/2009

Working as a volunteer for the first time in a country far away from home can sound really intimidating.

But for Kari Nickle, 21, Natasha Rupp, 18, and Sarah Woods, 21, the vocation is considered a blessing and they are quickly soaking up the culture they described as unique and yet exciting.

The thirst for new experiences and thoughts of new challenges brought them into the country.

They are part of Projects Abroad- a leading volunteer abroad organisation that offers diverse range of international service projects.

They said Fiji being a new location for the organization, added some level of anxiety to the journey.

Natasha, of Munich in Germany and the youngest of the three said she was intrigued by the thoughts of getting far away from home.

Sarah, an Australian, and Natasha have been working as volunteers at the Treasure Home orphanage in Nadi for the past couple of weeks.

The two live in the same house, sharing a room with all its amenities where their hosting family stays in Namaka.

Natasha said the culture and the weather is totally different but she is tagging along very well.

Unlike her friend Sarah, who is a nanny in Australia, Natasha said she had never worked with children before so the experience was very exciting.

She is taking a year break from the classroom and will continue her studies at university level next year.

Sarah said on the other hand she found the kids at the Treasure House very cheeky.

"The structure is good with good routine so that's why it works so well. I found it hard disciplining large numbers of children but it's going out great"

They went to church last Sunday and had planned to visit Beachcomber and Mana Island this weekend.

They were warned of the party environment Beachcomber is famous for.

But the two said the party was the reason they wanted to go.

Kari, who is from Hawaii, said she is enjoying her stay in Fiji and found the culture not very different from where she comes from.

"I think the best way to visit Fiji is through volunteering work. It is fun and you get to witness the real Fijian life," she said.

"We noticed that Fijian people really like their food and they keep pushing us plates to eat when we have had enough.

"We now even know the taxi charge from Namaka to work so no one can cheat us now.

"We are almost locals," Kari jokes.

The trio work five days a week from 9am to 5pm travel to work by bus and will be leaving the country in December.

They agreed their Fiji experience has been nothing but exciting and they are soaking up as much as they can for their family and friends back home.

They also vowed to spread the word to their friends and will visit the country again whenever they can.
