Elections Office start 2014 countdown

11/26/2009

Field surveys were carried out by staff of the Elections Office to carry out a feasibility study ahead of the 2014 General Elections.

Teams were sent out to the four divisions around Fiji to work with the district Commissioners and various relevant stakeholders on the confirmation of voter registration centres.

The centres would become designated polling stations in 2014. Acting Supervisor of Elections, Soro Toutou, said they also gauged the suitability of changes in the registration process on members of the public.

They also surveyed how members of the public would prefer their fingerprints and photographs to be collected as part of the process.

The office staff also figured out the percentage of the voting population without a birth certificate in the rural and urban areas.

In line with the Office’s preparation for the 2014 Elections, Mr Toutou will leave for a European Commission-funded trip for an electoral workshop in Brussels next week.

Mr Toutou said the joint EC and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) workshop would assist in plans to introduce electronic processes in the electoral system.

“Fiji must first fix its voter registration process if we want a fair and transparent elections in 2014,” he said.

“The workshop in Brussels would discuss the models available for introducing technology to assist Electoral Management Bodies in an electoral process,” he added.

The three-day workshop on The Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Electoral Processes will be at the European Commission headquarters from November 30 to December 2 From Brussels, Mr Toutou will leave for Finland where he is expected to meet with its Director In Charge of Elections, Arto Joaskelainen.
