PM, McCULLY SET HK DATE

2/22/2010

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama will meet with New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully in May.

But before that, Mr McCully has agreed to Fiji’s proposal that an informal meeting be arranged between him and Commodore Bainimarama during the Hong Kong Sevens, which will be held from March 26-28.

Commodore Bainimarama yesterday said he was “delighted” with the turn of events.

Fiji’s Foreign Affairs Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola revealed one of the issues that would be discussed then would be to organise a potential meeting between Commodore Bainimarama and New Zealand Prime Minister John Key.

In his report following his meeting with Mr McCully, Ratu Inoke said the meeting would focus on the reciprocal appointment of high commissioners and that travel sanctions could be discussed in-depth.

Ratu Inoke acknowledged the New Zealand Government for taking the initiative and responding positively for Fiji’s request for the re-establishment of and continuation of engagement as opposed to the isolationist approach taken previously.

The two ministers expressed satisfaction at the continuing commitment by both sides to this dialogue process and with the progress made in many of the issues that have been put on the table so far.

Ratu Inoke said Mr McCully expressed appreciation to the Foreign Affairs Ministry for agreeing to take the opportunity to hold their second bilateral session.

In an effort to improve bilateral relations, Mr McCully said the inaugural session held on January 9 at the InterContinental Fiji, at Natadola, was “indeed useful” and that it should continue.

Ratu Inoke said it was agreed that the structure of this dialogue would centre on one-on-one discussions at ministerial level.

Officials were only to help with clarification of issues where necessary and to pursue follow-up actions.
