Pirates will have vehicles seized, taxi union says

3/10/2010

Private cars operating as taxis now face the threat of being confiscated by the Land Transport Authority.

Fiji Taxi Union general secretary, Rishi Ram said this was agreed to at a meeting of Land Transport Authority executives with police.

Apart from private cars and vans, other modes of vehicles used as taxis will be confiscated too.

The decision was made after several concerns were raised by union members at their annual general meeting over the weekend that illegal taxi operators were taking away a bulk of taxi permit holders’ businesses.

However, the onus is now on permit holders to deliver demanded service as required.

“In view of this, the union has been directed to remind all taxi operators Fiji wide to abide by the taxi permit conditions where the taxi must be in operation 24 hours and seven days per week,” Mr Ram said.
