We can help: Police

3/10/2010

Police are willing to help people understand how the force can help them combat domestic violence, community policing national coordinator, Hari Chand says.

Superintendent Chand said officers would be happy to visit groups to speak on such topics if they were invited.

He made the comment as women around the world celebrated International Women’s Day.

Superintendent Chand said police were trying their best to raise awareness on safety and security of women.

“Most of the time questions raised in seminars or gatherings are from leaders of the women groups.

The individuals who really go through abuse and violence are unaware of how to go about seeking justice,” he said.

“We are there to help them.” He said the force has a no-drop policy on domestic violence and could help women obtain restraining orders and to collect personal property, should they wish to.

“The best way we can reach out to the people is through the media and to let those silent sufferers know there are places they can go to for their safety,” he said.
